Cumberland County Launches Broadband Survey

PORTLAND -- Cumberland County Government is asking residents and business owners to respond to a brief survey regarding their satisfaction with current Internet offerings and future broadband needs.

The survey is part of a broader research and planning project launched by Cumberland County in 2018, that is designed to help communities identify their broadband resources and determine whether they should pursue local projects to improve services.

The County will use data collected through the survey in conjunction with research and planning services performed by the James W. Sewall Company, in order to provide a full service playbook of broadband resources for communities within Cumberland County. The playbook will offer concrete, region-specific planning materials for towns and cities that elect to pursue broadband solutions, including cost projections for construction along major arteries and fiber-to-the-home; methods to establish voluntary regional partnerships and permanent utilities; and various options to fund and maintain municipal projects.

“We have two major goals here,” said Travis Kennedy, Director of Public Affairs for Cumberland County. “We want to help our communities get a picture of their specific needs and how they’re being met; and if they find a need, we want to offer cost-effective solutions. So getting a strong public response to this survey is really important.”

County residents and business owners can access more information about the research project and a link to the survey at http://cumberlandcounty.org/broadband.

The survey takes less than ten minutes to complete. No marketers will have access to the data. No one will contact respondents as a result of taking the survey.
