Cumberland County, ME – Cumberland County Manager James Gailey is pleased to announce the hiring of Travis Kennedy as Director of Public Affairs.

“We are thrilled to have Travis join the Cumberland County team,” Gailey said. “His legislative knowledge at both the State and Federal levels, as well as his existing relationships with towns countywide are strong assets he brings to the position.”

Kennedy began his political career as a legislative aide at the State Capital, where he managed a caucus load of sixteen for press, policy research, public speaking and casework for then House Majority Leader Glenn Cummings.  Two years later, Kennedy became the Communications Director for the House Democratic Office, under House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, where he coordinated the communications for ninety House Democrats, while also working the State Senate and Governor’s Office.  In 2008, Kennedy became the Chief of Staff for the House Democratic Office, a position he would hold until 2012.  His tenure as Chief of Staff spanned two leaders, House Majority Leader Piotti and House Minority Leader Cain.

In 2013, Kennedy joined the staff of the Office of United States Senator Angus King, Jr. as the Regional Representative for Cumberland County.  His role through this position was public outreach, surrogate speaking for the Senator and serving as a liaison between local and federal government in Cumberland County.

“I'm thrilled to join the Cumberland County team," Kennedy said. "It's a great opportunity. The staff and leadership at Cumberland County are top notch and I am looking forward to working with them in their constant quest to develop efficient and valuable services to the region. I live in Cumberland County with my family and we love our community. I've spent a lifetime building relationships and learning about what the area needs, and I'm excited to build on that experience representing the county locally, in Augusta and in Washington as we grow and thrive."

“Travis has a significant background and understanding in local, state and federal policy affairs,” according to County Manager Gailey. “His understanding of the issues the region is dealing with and his willingness to jump right in and add valuable capacity are strong aspects of his skills and abilities.”

Kennedy attended the University of Maine in Orono, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.  He lives in Scarborough, with his wife, Liv, and their daughter, Ella. Kennedy started his new position as the County’s Director of Public Affairs in late September.
