Homeshare Matching Feasibility Study

The community in Cumberland County has large homes that once teemed with children and family life. Today many such homes are occupied by 1 or 2 people, often elders struggling to maintain, heat, and pay taxes on their property.

We also know the challenges many young or single adults face in finding appropriate and affordable living arrangements. Could these two problems have a single solution?

Funding

In 2011 Cumberland County received almost $10,000 in Community Development Block Grant planning funds to examine the possibility of creating a homeshare matching program similar to successful programs such as HomeShare Vermont.

Study Results

An advisory board was formed that included:

  • Avesta Housing
  • Biddeford Community Development
  • Cumberland County
  • Freeport
  • Portland Planning Department
  • PROP
  • Southern Maine Agency on Aging
  • South Portland
  • Westbrook
  • Westbrook Housing Authority

The board met for 6 months and decided to contract with Pine Tree Legal to provide do-it-yourself information online. The homesharing site is currently in draft form and edits can be emailed to Elizabeth Trice, Grants & Special Projects Coordinator or by calling 207-871-8380.
